Emergency roof repair and tarping

When a storm tears off shingles or tiles, or water is coming through the ceiling, the first job is to stop more water from getting in. FarFan Contractors installs professional roof tarps and makes emergency repairs on homes in Lee, Charlotte, and Sarasota counties, other areas on request. Call (239) 224-2949.

Safety first

Before anything else

  • If anyone is hurt or in danger, call 911.
  • Stay off the roof. A wet, damaged roof is slippery and can give way.
  • Stay away from downed power lines and anything electrical that is wet.
  • Keep out of rooms where the ceiling is sagging or soaked.
  • Move furniture and valuables away from the leak and catch drips with buckets.
  • If it's safe, take photos of the damage from the ground and inside.

Is it an emergency

When to call right away

  • Water is coming through a ceiling, a light fixture, or a wall
  • A section of shingles, tiles, or metal has torn off
  • A tree or large limb is on the roof
  • You can see daylight through the deck from the attic

An old stain that isn't growing usually isn't an emergency, but it still needs a look soon. See roof repair.

Tarping

What a professional roof tarp looks like

A tarp is a temporary cover that keeps rain out until the roof can be repaired or replaced. A good one is not a loose sheet held down with bricks or sandbags.

  • A heavy-duty tarp sized to cover the damage with room to spare
  • Run over the ridge where possible, so water can't get under the top edge
  • Held down with wood battens fastened through to the roof framing with cap nails or screws
  • Edges secured so the wind can't get under it

A tarp buys time. It is not a repair. Once it's safe to work on the roof, we inspect it and recommend the permanent fix: a repair, or a new roof if the damage calls for it.

During storm season, see our storm response page.

Questions we hear first

If water is coming in now, or part of the roof is missing, yes. Call. If it's an old stain that isn't growing, it can wait for a scheduled look, but don't let it go long.
